Careers in Construction SWWA - Quail Homes
About Us/History:
Jon Girod, owner of Quail Custom Homes, founded his business in 1989 right here in Southwest Washington.
About 5 years ago, he met with school superintendents across the region and discovered a significant gap in our education system. While only about one-third of students pursue college, school facilities and curricula are primarily designed to serve them. Meanwhile, vocational training programs—where they existed—focused more on hobby-ready skills rather than job-ready skills.
He wanted to give back in a meaningful way and found the perfect opportunity.
In 2021, we launched Careers in Construction Southwest Washington (SWWA) to bridge this gap. At that time, there were fewer than 100 students enrolled in construction classes across the region. By Fall 2024, that number reached 1,250—a testament to the impact of our efforts.
What’s Driving This Growth?
• State-Approved Core Plus Curriculum – Students can now earn geometry credit while learning construction skills. How cool is that!
• Skilled Trade Centers on High School Campuses – Two completed, two under construction, three funded and in design, and two schools upgrading existing facilities for more advanced training.
• SkillsUSA Competitions – Students are competing in electrical, plumbing, framing, and carpentry, showcasing their talents at the state and national levels.
• Industry Engagement & Career Events – Through initiatives like Dozer Days Career Fair, the Youth Contractors Forum, and the Careers in Construction Grade 13 Hiring Event, we’re connecting students directly with industry professionals and career opportunities.
• Building More than Toolboxes – Inspiring the next generation of builders by connecting high school construction students with local elementary schools for hands-on learning. Through the Toolbox Event, young students explored real tools, igniting curiosity, creativity, and a passion for the trades.
• School Built Sheds – The School Built Shed program teaches both the “hard and soft” skills of building, sales, and marketing. Students build the sheds from start to finish and sell them to the public through their marketing efforts. All funds that are received from the sales go directly back into the program to fund their future builds.
In just four years, Careers in Construction SW WA has become the leading force in building industry workforce development in Southwest Washington. And we’re just getting started—We can’t wait to see what the future holds!
